Conclusion
Suspending hard baits are a great alternative to soft plastic lures when used in the right setting and under the correct conditions.
If you want to explore the entire water column and present a slower bait just beneath the surface, a suspending bait might be the way to go!
Be sure to know what water depth you are fishing in and how the fish are feeding given the time of year!

Great podcast guys. Good points all around. For me, I throw hard baits 3 to 1 over soft plastics. I love them all but the hard baits take more abuse. Rapala shad rap and mirrorlure. The Paul Brown pro series is quickly becoming a go to lure for me. That said, I keep my tackle bag loaded with all of these options. Good stuff.
Any thoughts on the Rapala Twitching Mulket? It gets very little mention here. I dig the inline hooks. But they seem to float/suspend MUCH more slowly than a comparable Mirrodine. One day I did well with one, but it seems to stay in last place when I’m choosing. Any Twitching Mullet fans here? If so, any tips regarding sink rate?
I am a converted bass fisherman and new to inshore. I was wondering if slim suspending jerk baits like a raplala suspending jerk bait would work. I know for bass whenever the water was cold the jerk bait was my confidence bait.Thoughts?
I use them regularly. Go for it.
Love the podcast! Great show you guys always learn so much from watching. I was always a live bait fisherman but since joining SS I have learned that soft plastics are the way to go. Until now I’ve never been much for hard baits but I have to put some in my arsenal to give them a try after watching the podcast. Thanks gentlemen.
Thanks Again for a great Podcast!
My question is regarding the hybred Soft Dine (Paul Brown/Mirrodine).
What do y’all think about those?
I did just watch Tony’s review of the PB Soft-dine, but did want your take on it.
My killer go-to suspending bait is a small lipped Rapala, Think Bass fishing jerk bait. X-Rap for more active/aggressive fish, and (my favorite) Shadow Rap for more finess and a slower presentation.
Just wondering if Wyatt eats canned SarDINEs or Sardeens?
He probably puts TomAHToe Sauce on his spaghetti, too. LOL!
“It’s only a flesh wound.”
(Those treble hooks!)
I’m in the middle of watching this video and wanted to quickly comment on Justins comments on the Rapala Twitching Rap. AWESOME lure! My favorite baby tarpon and snook lure. Just wanted to update everyone though. Have no idea why, but Rapala does not produce this lure or at least does not sell it in the states anymore.
I also wanted to mention that my best retrieve for the MirrOdine for tarpon is a pull pause retrieve.
Thanks Ron!
I don’t know what it is but I really enjoy throwing a hard plastic. I only have one, the Mirrodine XL and have yet to catch anything on it, but it’s fun. LOL
