Did Berkley GULP Really Change Their Formula Again? (VIDEO)

Are the original Berkley Gulp baits back?

Here’s the deal…

The past couple of months I’ve noticed that many of the new Berkley Gulp baits are feeling different… they are tougher and more durable than what I’ve been used to the last couple of years (since Berkley made the big mistake of changing up their formula).

It’s almost like the old school “Original” Gulp baits that we all loved are back…

What’s weird is that Berkley hasn’t made an announcement on this.

It’s almost as if they heard how much anglers were upset about the last Gulp material formula change, and they’ve been trying to get rid of all the inventory of the existing Gulp baits that are soft and weak while slowly bringing the original baits back before they make an official announcement… that’s at least just a guess.

Either way, I’m definitely seeing some better quality Gulp baits back in stores, so I put together this quick video to show you how to tell the difference in the good packs vs. the bad ones.

Enjoy and definitely leave me a comment below if you are seeing the same thing in your area.

Thanks for the info…. Also how long should a pack of gulp last in the pack? I have some old packs I found I have had for a year or so. Thanks

Luke – Hate to change the subject, but have you tried the Power Pro Super 8 braid ? If so , what do you think versus Power Pro?

Anybody know if the freshwater gulp are the same “flavor” as the saltwater gulp?
Just curious, they smell the same….

thanks for the heads up. I use a lot of Gulp.

Your right about the weak gulps – went through a pack in no time – just a few hits and lost bait. Found old pack in tackle box ( way to many lures) and could tell the differance. Thanks for the info!!!

I stopped using Gulp bait because they kept just being nibbled off the hook. I will look for the old ones. Worth a try.

I got a pack of the soft jerk shads a few months ago. They were so soft the weedless hook wouldn’t even stay in place, it kept deploying. Since then I have been checking them by feel. Thanks for the info. I have tried other jerk shads like the zman, but still don’t have the confidence I have in a gulp new penny jerk shad for big reds.

That was confusing…..is new better or worse? So old old is better than new old? But new may or may not be better……

I too have noticed that the Gulp! products appear to be much more durable in my past few purchases. They feel firmer and last longer. 👍

It just seems like Luke could get ahold of the Berkley rep for Florida, tell him/her that he represents 10’s of thousands of salt water anglers, and get the straight scope. Truly using the power of Salt Strong!!

Gulp really messed up. Since the change, I have explored other bait, and I really love the Z-Man products. I’ll still use a few Gulps, but I really like the durability and the action of the Z-Man products. I do like the Gulp jerk shads, I’ll use them when the pinfish aren’t around! Thanks for the reviews Luke. I typically make most of my purchases based on your information. Salt Strong Rocks!!!

Thanks for the heads up on Gulps. I have used them for years and noticed a change. Some previous videos you did made it clear for me and I shied away from them. Still have a bunch, probably a mix of not the old and new, because I use them mixed in containers based on size and style. Easier foe me to access and keep the juice from getting all over the boat. I will test the new packages as shown.

Luke, thank you for the update on Gulp. So glad to hear that the old formula seems to be returning. Really good tip on how to tell the difference via the packaging. Great job and thanks again.

What a relief! Hopefully Gulp will learn, “if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it!”

As Terrence mentioned, I now store my Gulps in a Plano waterproof container with the rubber seal and it works fantastic! I keep a bottle of the liquid Gulp regeneration to add occasionally to keep them fresh. Works like a charm. Glad to hear the old formula might be making a comeback! That’s some good news!

Good for you guys and good for Gulp. The consumer is, and should be, always in control. A good product should be rewarded, but should guard its market carefully, always aware of customer response to any changes and quick to respond accordingly. Thanks for the info.

I love em, because they were excellent before the change. Hopefully they learned a lesson. Saltstrong nation saying no to inferior products. 💪💪💪

I bought some root beer shrimp 2 months ago and nothing but crap. Couldn’t cast them without them sliding down the jig head. Pure junk

Hey Luke, I remember your first post regarding a possible change in the gulp formula. I have written to Berkeley customer service twice in the past 6 months, but no response from them. Have not been able to find a worthwhile package of the new Penny shrimp in either color package. Still a great scent/taste, but can’t handle the inferior material now. Let’s hope you’re right about them bringing back the old formula.

thank you for this- i will again look at the gulp for the new packs- i loved them but watching some fly off the hook on the cast or with every hit, (yes i know i sometimes get a little ruff casing but it wasn’t all me 🙂 ) made me leave them. my guess they heard us and did not want to admit their mistake and have waited until the ones on the shelf were gone.

Kind of off topic a bit, but i bought one of the Plano aftermarket plastic containers with a real gasket for storing my baits, yes torques me off that for $10 the berkley container does not seal. I needed a bit more liquid in it and was about to buy a berkley 8oz. bottle of recharge for $8.99 when i realized i could buy the small 7.something oz container including a bunch of baits for $9.99 and just dump it into the Plano container. Duh…..
and yes, the Plano container seals well

I just recently started using the Gulp shrimp, on seeing your recommendation and on others posts, and got one of the ‘value’ big containers. I guess they are the ‘soft’ formula, as the pinfish made short work of the first 3 I used. I’ll look for some of the ‘good’/old or new-old formula ones; thank you for this video on what to look for! The bucket ones I’ll reserve for fishing areas other than grass flats loaded with pinfish, like for Flounder on mud or sand bottoms. Or, like a tip you gave, use them when they get torn up for bait in small pieces for pinfish and grunts.
Thanks for the ‘heads up’ on the change! 👍

I had no idea they changed at all but I know the last few packages that I’ve bought have been terrible, I told my wife this weekend that I’m not buying any more I’ve been getting 1 fish per gulp. Thanks for the video now I know what to look for. Mike

The last 2 packs of gulp shrimp I bought were as good as the original and they were the n the all white packages. I was pleasantly surprised!

I bought some at Dicks in Orlando and I noticed a huge difference rite away. I thought it was the old formula. I also noticed the package had Chinese writing on it. Never seen that before.

That’s awesome news but how do you know before you buy. There has to be brittle stuff still on the shelves unless Berkley bought them back

Richard Fiorentino

Stopped buying them after the change. Thanks for info . I will try again

Gosh I hope but I have had the worst batches I have ever used this past December and January!
