Luke knows the secrets of how to catch grouper and cobia nearshore on top of reefs and bottom structure.
So many comments have been coming in lately asking about nearshore reef jigs and what Luke uses to catch so many fish.
He’s here to talk about the exact rig he’s been using as well as why he’s had so much success lately.
Even better, you can easily replicate these results for yourself!!

Gotta love heading out after Cobia! Some of the most fun fishing out there!
Your discussion on rod construction was interesting to say the least. When will this new prototype rod be available? You also mentioned the St Croix Legend Tournament 7’6” combined with the Daiwa BG 3000 in your article about how to retrieve the shrimp jigs. How would you compare the prototype to the Legend Tournament?
Your question was perfectly times because I literally just got back from a trip in which I tested what will be our final version of the MH power rod for reef fishing… it performed extremely well with getting a 22 inch grouper away from a bridge piling as well as some nice snook away from docks all while being sensitive enough to feel pinfish tapping at the lure.
Compared to my MH power Legend Tournament, this new custom one has noticeably better feel and casting performance with just slightly less power (aka – a lighter blank). I think it’ll be a game changer for those of us who are using lures for upper/over slot redfish/snook around structure as well as for those of us who like sneaking off to nearshore reefs for cobia & grouper.
Thanks. You guys are changing the way we fish. I’m a science guy so I loved the discussion on the rods. It gives us more to think about.
So glad to see that you’re enjoying the technical discussions on rods! I’ve become much more interested in blank materials and guide placements over the past couple years as we’ve been digging further into the specifics…. it’s been shocking how some small tweaks can make a big difference (and how so many production rods are not built to optimize performance).
Luke, how long did each drift last? I’m sure it’s based on wind and overall reef size, yet my first attempt at the nearshore reef fishing didn’t go so well. I felt like we were just drifting randomly the majority of the time because the reef itself was like one tiny speck on the map. I’m not even sure I really saw a very defined “reef” or difference on the bottom via my sonar, so who knows if we even fished it accurately despite drifting and readjusting the boat in the same general area for nearly 3hrs.
The drift period depends on how big the reef is as well as how fast the current/wind is pushing. I was fishing a big nearshore reef that has scattered structure spanning at about 500 yards and about 300 yards the other. So there is plenty of territory to drift before getting out of the structure. And as soon as I stopping seeing structure on the bottom, I turned the boat on to go back to the starting point for another drift.
If you’re not seeing any bottom structure on your sonar, then you’re likely not going to be catching anything… the key is to get your lures/baits on the bottom near that structure as much as possible during the drift.
Joe, when do you plan on removing the large Dr Juice from the shop? I agree that the spray bottle itself is very frustrating to use once clogged up, however I purchased a set of 2oz dropper bottles from Amazon that work amazingly! The dropper is such an awesome applicator of the Dr Juice, and I don’t have to worry about spraying or flipping up the spout lid that’s on the smaller Dr Juice bottle. I want to make sure that I stock up even more than what I already have saved haha.
We’ll be taking down the Dr. Juice spray bottom product once the current stash we have sells out… looks like we have about 30 days worth of inventory left as of now.
Nice video as always, missing your videos where you do a full pre, during and post fishing trips around there area, you aren’t pulling away from the video making are you?
Anyway, I am new to this type of fishing, just was able to upgrade my skiff to a bay boat and have been out twice this month. I have only really had four small groupers and a couple lizard fish, no luck finding the cobia, any tips? Also, anything in particular they want in terms of structure, time of day, tides, etc..?
Also, king of the beach was this month for kingfish, any tips on catching kingfish, setup, lures, location, etc…Not sure if you go after those types of fish as well.
Thanks Shane! I’ve been slammed with office work, hurricane cleanup, and some vacation time over the past couple months, so I haven’t had the normal amount of Insider Reports… but I’m back on a normal schedule so should have at least 1 per week going forward.
I understand that! We are right back in the cleanup process with Nicole now, so hopefully you made out alright as well. Look forward to those reports and maybe I will see you out on the reefs soon!
