The Johnson Silver Minnow came about when a fisherman and his son were frustrated that all they would catch were weeds and grass and not the bass they were after.

They went home and created the weedless Johnson Silver Minnow.

Today, the lure is still the exact same design as it was 100 years ago.

There are a few situations while out on the water where this jig is the go-to.

Wire Weed Guard

This jig comes equipped with a wire weed guard to maintain a weedless presentation.

In addition to maintaining a weedless presentation, the wire weed guard also creates the side-to-side wobble action of the lure.

These two features combined create a natural motion in the water while avoiding any possible snags.

You really can throw the Silver Minnow out and swim it back through just about anything without getting snagged.

Side-To-Side Wobble

The Silver Minnow attracts fish and triggers strikes due to its side-to-side wobble in the water.

No matter what, the fish will see and feel the flash and wobble of this jig.

If the fish approaches from the side, top, or bottom, the flash and wobble are the exact same presentation.

270-Degree Wobble

The fact that the spoon only wobbles 270-degrees means it does not spin all the way around.

As a result, you do not need to use additional swivels or attachments.

You can tie the Johnson Silver Minnow directly to your leader.

The fewer points of failure you have on your line, the greater chance you maintain secure contact with the fish.

Wind

When the wind is howling and blowing in your face, the Silver Minnow will still produce.

Because of its thin profile and aerodynamics, you will be surprised how well this jig cuts into the wind.

Oyster Beds

Oyster beds are fish magnets but can also be hook magnets.

It is easy to snag yourself up on an oyster bed while you patrol it looking for fish.

Due to the side-to-side wobble and weed guard on the jig, it will simply bounce right across oyster beds.

Trash Fish Situations

We’ve all found ourselves fishing on a flat but all we can manage to hook are trash fish that bite up our soft plastic lures and leader line.

In that case, turn to the Johnson Silver Minnow.

It will mimic the vibration of a paddletail lure and create an attractive flash in the water all while avoiding trash fish.

You will still have the flash and vibration of a paddletail without having to worry about pesky trash fish destroying your lures.

It’s already in the box ! 🙂
I’m not joking when I say that there are a TON of scenarios to maximize the opportunity to catch fish and having the proper lure and retrieve techniques make ALL THE DIFFERENCE in the world !!
Thank you Pat

I have a newspaper article from the Oklahoma City Times, Sept. 7, 1945. The story is about Fred Newton White, who invented a weedless spoon named Newton’s Comet Spoon. I have one in the original box. He sold thousands of them from plants in OKC and Mission, Kansas. It came in bright nickel and shiner finish. It’s the same design of the Johnson spoon. What’s the saying, “Success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan”.

In one day i caught: bass, redfish, speckled trout, white trout, black drum, and a flounder. All on the same spoon in the same body of water.

I have used this lure for over 50 years and caught numerous species both fresh and saltwater, from flounder to bass, bluefish, trout etc. A must for every tackle box.

Thanks for the short review. So many times I pass over spoons for paddle tails, but will keep it in the shrinking arsenal.

My dear Salt and fish family, I have used the Johnson weed less silver spoon in the past with much success in both fresh water and salt water. Bass, pickerel, blue fish, striped bass and more! I agree with you that this spoon belongs in everybody’s tackle box. You never know when the fish will be hiding out in structure the will just rob you of your lure or mess up your presentation.

Should talk about the retrieval.

The gold color tarnishes fairly soon. Is it less effective after it tarnishes?
And, has anyone tried to “buff it” to get the new gold look back?
