If your leader keeps wrapping around the front hook of topwater lures or other hard-body baits, then ditch the loop knot.
Although a loop knot adds more action to your lures, this can lead to more headaches.
Instead of a loop knot, go ahead and tie your lures to leader using a snug knot.
This keeps the leader line away from the hooks resulting in less tangles.

I remember when I first joined saltstrong back in 2017 and asked that same question and it was you I asked and what you told me was different then timing another knot you just simply said to change the front hook into a size smaller then the rear hook and it not only worked but makes sence to because a smaller hook can’t swing up over the top of your line to catch it like it can if your using the same size of hook you have on the rear of your plug so ever since then when I change my trebles out after I buy a new plug I always use a 1 size smaller then the rear hook for instance if I was to change the trebles out on a spook jr I would put on a number 1 inline hook in the front and a 1/0 hook on the rear problem solved so you can keep using a loop knot although for me I use a bill Norman’s speed clip on all my plugs for quick change outs and I use a Polamalu knot for this no need to use a loop knot because the clip acts like a loopknot by giving the plug much freedom of movement but I only use the clips on my hard plugs on my spinnerbaits I do use the Palomar knot as well but on my jigs and plastic shrimp I use a loopknot works for me thanks for the info and all you do😉👍
That also works, but if you need a quick fix this can help.
I’m starting to use a split ring instead of the loop knot on my Corky’s. Still get the action without the hook fouling up.
Yea but the only problem with a split ring is where the band comes together the sharp edges of tge ends of the ring can and sometimes will cut into your line also a knot can slip under the ring and eventually the line can come free of the plug just saying in all my 21 years of fishing inshore and about 34 years of fishing freshwater I have seen and EXPERIENCED it all but its up to you how you want to attach your line for me a bill norman speed clip tied on with a Palomar knot is my tried and failsafe true method of connection of leader to lure goodluck😉👍
Watched a Speckled Truth podcast recently that recommended staying away from clips. I guess everyone has their preference from personal experience.

Thanks. I definitely prefer the loop knot but get frustrated with the hook fouling on plugs. I’m not great at tying a small loop knot.

Definitely helps! As long as you’re using a fairly light leader it doesn’t affect the action.
Great tip Tony, I tie a SMALL loop knot on my topwaters, along with letting the lure settle for a second prior to retrieving in a Walk the Dog manner & that has solved the problem for me.
Thanks George! Also helps to try to keep tension on the line by raising the rod tip during pauses.
