Introducing The New Hoss Helix Hook Sizes
- By: Luke Simonds
- on
We’re proud to report that the two most requested new sizes for Hoss Helix Hooks are available to Insider Club members.
In case you’re not yet familiar with the Helix hooks, they are the ultimate weighted hook for using soft plastic lures in shallow water because it has the best blend of the following key performance characteristics we need from our weighted hooks:
- Easy to rig lures onto
- Weedless lure presentation
- Great hookup ratio
The original Hoss Helix hooks were only available in the 1/8th oz size for both the 3/0 & 4/0 sized hooks, and they quickly became our top seller as more and more members kept posting catch reports in the Community platform.
We had a ton of requests for getting them in 1/16th & 3/16th sizes from members who wanted to have more control over their running depths, so we went ahead and made molds for both sizes for each hook.
Here’s a video showing how they look!

Size Selection Tips
The first thing to note is that the Hoss Helix Hooks were originally designed to pair perfectly with the Power Prawn USA lures.
But based on customer feedback along with our own findings, we learned these hooks work extremely well with a most other soft plastic lures too.
Here’s a quick list showing which lures pair with each hook size:
- Power Prawn USA Jr (3.5 inches long)
- Slam Series 2.0 paddletails (3.5 inches long)
- Slam Series Jerks (5 inches long)
- Slam Series Bombers (5 inches long)
Note: As you use lures on the bigger end of the range, it’s essential to use a fast action rod with a strong backbone to be able to drive home hooksets… if using a Medium Light rod or a Moderate action rod, go with 4/0 sized hook for any lure over 4″ long.
- Power Prawn USA Original (4.3 inches)
- Slam Series Jerks (5 inches)
- Slam Series Bombers (5 inches)
Depth Ranges
When fishing the shallows, every 6 inches of depth coverage can be crucial to maximize your results. Here’s a quick listing of the depth ranges that each of these weights will most effectively cover:
- 1/16th oz = 0.5 to 1.5 ft
- 1/8th oz = 1.0 to 2.5 ft
- 3/16th oz = 1.5 to 3.0 ft
Note: Please note that the lures like paddletails with water drag will ride slightly higher in the water column compared to streamlined lures like Power Prawns & Jerk Shads. The depth ranges above show a general average.
Conclusion
Sometimes we may not even think twice about it, but the hooks we choose to use have an enormous impact on both our presentation and the number of strikes we are able to trigger.
These hooks have surpassed our high expectations on their performance given how they have proved to work great for the Power Prawn USA lures they were designed for while also working great for all other soft plastics we use on a normal basis.

Thanks for offering the variety. I’m looking forward to fishing these for white bass during Spring runs in TN. Used the Slam Shady 2.0 on 1/4 and 3/8 oz jigs last spring. These will allow me to fish the surface layers more effectively.
So glad to see that you’ll be using these new rigging hooks to customize your shallow water coverage.
They look awesome im going to need all three sizes
So glad to see that you’ll be trying out these new hooks! We look forward to hearing your thoughts about them once you’ve had time to put them to the test.
Thanks for coming out with a 3/16. It should work great with the strong currents and tide flow in my area.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts about then after you have had a chance to fish them.

Awesome! I love the Hoss Helix hooks, have been wanting some bigger/heavier ones to use Bass fishing too.
Glad to see that you were looking for some heavier hook.

Our pleasure!
Been waiting for these! Can’t wait to use them!
Should have my 3/16 any day and really looking forward to them. After rethinking my fishing lately and where I’ve been these heavier hooks should be the game changer I’ve been looking for.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on these new hooks once you have time to use them.
I fish the Zman paddletails quite a bit. You stated that you wouldn’t use these on Zmans. What do you suggest we use with the Zmans?
Zmans do better with weighted hooks that have a pronounced point/keeper at the top bend of the hook to help keep the slippery material from sliding down during the retrieve. Here’s one they make that works great for Zman lures: https://fishstrong.com/collections/saltwater-hooks/products/z-man-chinlockz-sws-weighted-hooks?variant=43303876985006
Note: I highly recommend against these types of weighted hooks for non-Zman lures because that barb on the point will rip up the soft plastic to the point it’ll significantly decrease the amount of fish per lure that can be caught.
Awesome!
So glad to see that you like these new weighted hook options!
