I really liked Courtney’s beach vid. I went down to the beach a low tide and could see all the troughs and points
I think this will improve my surf casting days
That’s so good to hear, Tom! I’m happy that you enjoyed it!
Question for the team from the Galveston area. What makes the water turn green along the beaches in Galveston?
Hey Jack! It’s highly dependent on wind direction and tide along the beach. Low winds, incoming tides, and long periods of time without storms will contribute to cleaner, greener water. Heavy outgoing tides, strong onshore winds, and freshwater dump outs (typically after storms) will contribute to dirtier, browner water.
I find myself in Saint Louis for the summer and missing my boats and dock in PGI. Bought a rod and reel and went to the lake behind my son’s house here in town. Quiet, flatwater, small lake. I pulled out a Z-Man paddle tail on a weighted and caught around fifteen bass from he shore in a couple of hours. Thank you for all of your guidance and confidence that you have given me. I do, in fact, catch more fish now.
That’s so awesome, Stuart!! Appreciate the support and we’re thrilled you are loving Salt Strong!
Kudos to Courtney on a fantastic video on reading the beach. I learned more in her short video than in all the other programs I have watched over the years. Thank you, Courtney and keep the good videos coming
Thanks so much, David! Appreciate you big time!
Great podcast and discussion, I’ll be putting all this good info to use in 3 weeks… can’t wait.
Awesome Rod! Safe travels & tight lines!
As usual, great information! My wife and I are setting up a trip to Perdido Key for this coming Memorial Day Weekend with my grown kids and grandkids. FISHING AND GOLF ARE HEAVY ON THE RADAR!!!!!! I’m searching Google Maps but is anyone familiar with the area that could steer me to some easily accessible (and maybe some not so easily accessible spots if I can sneak out) productive spots to wet a line?
Thank you in advance and again, GREAT JOB SALT STRONG CREW.
Hi John! Thanks for tuning in! I’d check out Johnson Beach for sure. Tight lines and safe travels!
Often times when I am on vacation, we are at a beach. My main setup is geared toward inshore. I often need to use it for beach fishing. Is there a big difference in getting a beach rig specific to when I do beach fishing? At what point is it work investing in both?
Good question Andrew! Of course you can use your inshore setup to fish off the beach BUT the most effective surf gear is quite different than inshore. For example, a lot surf fishing is done on the bottom thus you need a significant amount of weight (2-6 ounces) to hold it there due to current/winds etc. Most inshore rods are not built/rated to cast that amount of weight. Also, a huge advantage of a surf rod is the casting ability in regards to distance. The longer the rod, the farther you can cast (also the more difficult to cast). I suggest a 9-12 ft rod. A 10 ft rod is a great place to start. In addition, reels used on a surf rod are typically much beefier than your typical inshore set up. Basically, if you find yourself doing a lot of beach fishing, I’d definitely recommend investing in some gear. Hope this helps!
First of all, Thanks to Joe and company in this POD cast for your info and advise. On these discussions take the topic two steps further and add pics, videos, drone footage, etc. to give more content and info to convey on the topic, especially at the 22:46 mark, when Cortney showed the picture of the beach runoff example and Justin was intrigued by what she showed for her example. It will grab more attention and understanding on this subject matter. Visual aides go a very long way. 🙂 Thanks again.
Excellent feedback, David!
Is this podcast a regular Tuesday thing? Are topics announced beforehand to any extent?
Hey William! Yes, we do a podcast release every Tuesday and Thursday at 5AM EST (it gets released first on Apple iTunes, Stitcher, and Spotify). Then we publish it here on the blog later in the afternoon. Most of the topics come from questions from the community so let us know what you want us to cover. Appreciate you big time.
hey courtney great podcast. Where in Jax are the better beaches for numbers and quality of runouts?
Hi Robert! It changes so often here but right now the beaches in this area with great structure are South Jacksonville Beach to Ponte Vedra and Little Talbot Island. Tight Lines, my friend! Let me know if you need anything else courtney@saltstrong.com
