How To Catch Unlimited Trout On Grass Flats (Without A Fancy Boat)
- By: Joseph Simonds

Have you ever had one of those days where you were catching fish nonstop?
Aren’t those are the best days?!
In part two of this LIVE fishing trip (see part one here), Luke and I got on a bite so hot that we were doubling up nearly every cast.
In fact, our captain for the day, Will from Freedom Boat Club, got in on the action, too, and many times we were tripling up!
This was a continuation of our podcast from last week where we purposely went out on a bay boat with no trolling motor or anchor just to see how many trout we could catch.
Spoiler alert: we caught a ton!
And we’ll show you exactly how you can do it, too.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- The best types of spots to catch dozens of trout (at one point, Luke hooked up ten casts in a row)
- How to catch fish even if you don’t have a fancy trolling motor or Power-Pole
- The best types of lures to catch fish in grass flats
- Why it’s important to get your lure down to where the fish are (and how to do that)
- How knowing the trends can be the difference between getting skunked and having a great day
- And much more!
If you want to quickly find large schools of feeding speckled trout (aka spotted sea trout), then you’re going to love this episode.
I definitely recommend watching the video version of this podcast below, but you can also listen to the audio version by clicking the play button underneath it, or on iTunes, Stitcher, or Spotify.

What a fun trip!
Even if you don’t have a fancy boat with all the accessories, you can still get on the water and catch a ton of fish.

Joe, love you, man, but please let Luke finish a thought.
What kind of brother would I be to let him finish a sentence?
By the way, which time were you referring to?? Haha.
Love ya buddy!
How about not handling the fish so much when releasing? I enjoy the show and you both do a good job with communication and camaraderie, but would like to see more eco-friendly handling. Thanks and Fish On!
Yes, we always try to release as quickly as possible. Thanks for the great reminder, Tracy.
As we learned in this interview with one of the nation’s leading scientists on catch and release inshore fishing, the biggest threat to a trout not surviving is being hooked deep in the mouth.
It’s a really awesome interview if you haven’t heard it: https://saltstrongdev.wpengine.com/articles/catch-and-release-science/
Thanks! That was great!
Does Freedom Boat Club have anchor pins?
I don’t believe that they provide anchor pins in their boats.
Thanks, Joe mention that we get to see the actual spot, where? I know its Fort De Soto but that is a big place.
The details on this trip was sent out to all Insider Club members on March 13th as part of the weekly Smart Fishing Game Plan lesson. It was featured in the game plan details for catching max quantities (along with some of the underwater footage that we shot later that day)… starts at the 1 minute mark: https://saltstrongdev.wpengine.com/fishing-tip/smart-fishing-game-plan-march-13th-15th/
Thanks Luke, found it!!!
Luke, Joe, Awesome video. It looked super fun. When you are into fish that heavy how often do you stop and retie your terminal knots?
That’s a good question. I’m interested in the answer lol
Great question! I only retie my terminal tackle while fishing if I see that the line is compromised from a fish or underwater structure.
