Fiddler crabs are tough to come by when it’s colder out because they burrow in the ground.
The good news is you can catch your own – in the right areas!
First, you need to look for shorelines with soft sand and scattered debris.
Grass, rocks, and tree limbs paired with soft sand are the best spots to look at.
Muddy backwater shorelines near boat ramps are also hotspots for fiddlers.
Next, you want to look for nickel and dime-sized holes in the ground.
These are tell-tale signs of fiddler crabs in the area.
Ideally, you want to find the holes with fresh dirt just outside of them.
That indicates a fiddler crab has just recently started to burrow there.
Whatever tool you have to dig them up, insert the tool at a slight angle next to the hole and pop the dirt up to lift it out.
The fiddler crab might start running or it will still be in the dirt.

Dont use bait because I’m horrible with it plus dont have the patience but if I did my suggestion would be to bring all the items you have plus an old colander you know a strainer you use for spaghetti and other things needed to be strained then after you dig up the hole instead of dropping the dirt on the ground put it in the colander and shake the dirt out leaving the crab im sure this would prevent the crab from running away better just make sure your wife doesn’t think you just used the colander that would be used later for making dinner if you know what I mean otherwise you might have an even bigger crab to deal with😂 but colanders are cheap especially the plastic ones about 2 bucks at the dollar store thanks for the info and all you do 😉👍

Great information! I’m an expert at finding mud crabs but never found fiddlers. I went for a walk this morning and found a hidden trail that leads to a back water creek with hundreds of those holes. I also found an area of mangroves near the water that had hundreds of burrows. I’m going back with something to dig them up.
