Coach Pat’s Lure Bundle Lessons

These are the lures that I use day in and day out to catch Redfish, Snook, Trout and Flounder in all my travels across the country. This is a collection of my absolute favorite confidence baits and I made sure and include lures that cover the top of the water column, the middle and the lower water column along with some important accessories and the hooks I use to rig them. In the following videos they will give you some tips on how and when to use these lures so you can maximize your success on the water. Also, make sure and click the Mini-Course links below each section to get the most out of each lure.

Moonwalker

This a a topwater lure that is ready to go out of the box. No need to replace the hooks as it comes with quality ones from the factory.

When I’m going to use this lure is low light conditions such as first thing in the morning, late in the evening or even at night. Another great time to use it is on overcast and cloudy days. You can use it even on bright sunny days if you see fish actively chasing bait on the surface.

I will vary up my retrieve speed and the amount of pauses until I find out what the fish want that day.

I will fish this just about anywhere you can find inshore fish but preferably in 2-4 foot of water. There are some situations that you can fish deeper or shallower but for me, the sweet spot is 2-4 foot.

I like to use a 7 to 7 1/2 foot Medium or Medium Heavy rod with a 3000 size reel spooled with 10 pound braid and a 30 pound monofilament leader attached to the main line with an FG knot and the leader attached to the lure with a non slip loop knot.

Here is a video showing how to do the correct retrieve with the Moonwalker:

2.0 Series Paddle Tails

This is the lure that I use most of the time and because I use them around a lot of grass and oysters I like to rig them on a Hoss Helix 3/0 1/8oz hook.

I like to cast these lures near structure and reel them in close to the bottom when fishing for redfish and flounder whereas when fishing for  trout and snook I will reel them in faster towards the middle of the water column.

Another way I will rig them is on a Z man Pro Shroomz jig head. This allows for an exposed hook presentation for better hooksets and still give the ability to swim the lure in the middle of the water column. Another advantage of the Pro Shroomz jig is that when the lure is at rest on the bottom, it will stand up on it’s head vertically instead of falling over. Just the movement of the water will impart action in the lure even at rest. This is a very good presentation in the winter time when you have to slow your lure way down. The same is true in the summer when its hot and the fish do not want to chase bait.

I typically use a Medium Light to Medium Power rod with a 2500 series reel spooled with 10 pound braid and a 20 pound leader when fishing with the 2.0 series of baits. I will attach the hook with a non slip loop knot.

The way I chose what color to use is typically dependent of the water. In clear to slightly off colored water I will use the lite Slam Shady color, In tannic or stained water the pink F.R.E.D works well and in muddy or heavily sedimented water in will use the dark Gold Digger color. Although the Slam Shady will work in most water conditions, I would consider that color almost universal. It is also important to match the hatch if there is a lot of bait in the area. This Bundle has what you need to accomplish this.

Slam Shady Bomber

This is the lure that I will use when the fish are feeding on larger bait particularly in late summer and fall but they will work any time of year when the bait fish is on the larger side.

I’ll rig these on the Hoss Helix 4/0 hooks for fishing in water from 1-3 foot and it works especially well when fish are chasing bait along the shore line or the open grass flats.

Another favorite way to use these is to skip cast them under docks and mangrove trees. Because of it’s long flat body and the fact it is on the heavier side, this is one of the best skipping lures I have ever used. If you’ve been wanting to learn how to skip a lure, this is the one to start with.

The equipment I use with this lure is a 7 1/2 foot Medium or Medium Heavy with a 3000 sized reel spooled with 10 pound braid and 20 pound leader if fishing the grass flats. If I am fishing structure like docks or mangroves I will bump up to 30 pound leader or higher. I attach the hook with a non slip loop knot.

Alabama Leprechaun Jerk Shad

This is one of the lures I will use to cover the bottom of the water column. Typically I like to use these in water depths between 1-3 foot and when the water is on the clearer side. These lures work well when the fish are highly pressured or are being finicky or lethargic.

Most of the time I will rig these on a Hoss Helix hook in the 4/0 1/8oz size although the 3/0 size hook works well with it too.

Another situation that I like using these in is sight casting to fish. Sometimes paddle tails can put off a little too much vibration a can spook weary fish and that is when the jerk bait can do a great job.

When it comes to flounder fishing the jerk bait excels. With its larger profile and the ability to crawl it on the bottom when rigged weedless, those two factors make it an excellent flounder lure.

These lures will catch Redfish, Snook, Trout and Flounder year round. It is one of the more versatile lures you can fish with.

Power Prawn USA JR

This is one of the best shrimp imitation lures out there. I’ve caught fish on this lure in the natural color in so many different situations and it has saved the day on numerus occasions.

My favorite way to rig it is on the 1/6oz Pro Shroomz jig head because when it is at rest the lure stands up vertically and the water movement will cause the tail to move around and the fish will jump all over it. This presentation works well in both cold and warmer water because in both situations the fish can be lethargic and not want to move much. With the ability to stand on it’s end without falling over, this is a winner. I will use this presentation when I am fishing hard structure and I want the lure to stay close to it such as dock pylons or seawalls.

Another way I rig the Power Prawn USA Jr is on a 3/0 1/8oz Hoss Helix hook. This way the lure will stay weedless and it gives the shrimp a different presentation. With this rigging method the Power Prawn USA Jr will glide to the bottom after being twitched much like a real shrimp would instead of falling straight down like it would when rigged on a jig head. When I would use this presentation is fishing grass flats and oysters.

Battle Rattles

Battle Rattles are a small glass insert that has metal beads inside that mimic the sound of a fleeing shrimp and in certain situations can really make a difference in the amount of strikes you will get.

I like to use rattles in my lure in a couple of different situations. The first is in muddy or cloudy water with low visibility. The sound the rattles make will give the fish something else to key in on so they can find your lure in situations where it is hard to see.

Another time that I will use rattles in my lure is when there is a ton of bait present and you need a little extra from your lure to single it out among all of the bait. With a little more aggressive retrieve and the sound that the rattle will make the fish will be able to sort your lure out from the rest.

Dr Juice Inshore Slam Scent

This proprietary scent is made just for us and it is not your typical scent made of ground up fish or shrimp molded into a paste. This has ingredients that are meant to not only attract the fish but also to trigger the bite.

I have been fishing a long time and for many years was not a believer in using scents on my lures. But in the past year or so I have been using this scent and I now have so much confidence in it I do not fish without it. The Dr Juice Inshore Slam Scent has changed my mind, I now put it on all my lures from soft plastics to topwaters.
