How do you know when to use a Ned Rig?
What is the best time to use this type of technique?
Ned Rig jigheads are relatively new to saltwater fishing but can be extremely effective.
Learn all about it below!!
When To Use A Ned Rig
The Ned Rig has been a go-to for bass anglers for years and it is recently being applied to inshore saltwater fishing.
What makes this lure stand out from the rest is the flat-rounded head that sits the lure vertical to the sky as you bounce it along the bottom.
You can even let your lure sit there and the tail of it will wiggle in the current and stand out in the grass.
This allows you to use just about any different type of paddletail on this rig no matter the material the lure is made out of.
Top 3 Ways To Use The Ned Rig
1. Winter Fishing
One of the best times to use this rig is in the coldest part of winter.
Right after cold fronts when fish are lethargic and lazy is when this rig shines.
All you need to do is cast the lure out and slowly retrieve it back at your own pace.
In an effort to attract more fish to your lure, let it sit on the bottom and wiggle around in the current.
To further enhance your presentation, apply some Dr. Juice Saltwater Slam Scent to your lures.
2. Sight Casting Fish In Shallow Water
Traditional soft plastic lures and rigs will splash and create a commotion in the water due to their weight.
Fish in shallow water have a heightened sensibility for their surroundings.
Loud splashes and vibrations have the tendency to spook these fish out of where they were holding.
The Ned Rig setup is small and lands quietly in the water which will allow you to target fish up in the shallows.
3. High-Pressure Situations
After weeks of seeing jerk baits and paddletails, the Ned Rig is unlike any rig the fish have seen before.
Adding a little Dr. Juice scent while also staying patient will help you land fish that are extremely picky.
Furthermore, our 2.0 series paddletails are an ideal match for the Ned Rig jighead.
The 2.0 part of the lure’s name is because it can be rigged multiple ways.
You can pop the tail off of these lures to create the Nub Rig.
You’ve turned a 3.5-inch paddletail into a 3-inch jerk bait.

Great video and tips Pat! 💪 You know I’m a believer! 🔥🔥
Thanks Matt! Hard not to believe when you know!
After finally watching this and Matt’s current post. I am a believer too.
Unfair Lures smack baits will do the same thing
Been wondering how you were fishing these. Excellent explanation. Definitely going to give this a shot since it clearly is working well for you!
If you’re ever in a situation where you’re casting to spooky fish, this will get the job done!
i’ve been using those jigheads on a 3 way rig with slim swim z in greasy prawn with good success. i use a larger jighead on the longer line with a bigger bait on it. when we used a baitcaster for topwater baits in shallow water i stop the reel from spinning just before the bait hits the water. that reduces the noise and splash.
Sounds like an interesting set up! Thanks for sharing!
you r welcome.
Great jig heads. Only downside does not go through thick sea grass easily due to the shape and hook eye placement.
You are right about that Martee. They do make them in weedless versions that I have yet to try.
They have weedless versions that are basically the same as the standard style, but have two metal weed guards. They work, but there is another I’ve found to be the absolute best: The EWG weedless style Ned heads! They flat out work. The hook up ratio is about the same, and it pins the fish better than the standard hook. You can bury the hook in the soft plastic when fishing in heavy vegetation or structure, skin hook it for rock and oyster bars, or have the hook completely exposed for open water. When hopping the bottom… I prefer to use a buoyant soft plastic that stands up, because the added weight in the hook makes normal soft plastics lay to the side. Even just swimming it works well.
Thanks for the tip!
That sounds like a winner. What weight has been best? ZMan? Which ones have worked for you?
I use the 1/6 and 1/10 depending on depth. The Z man Pro Shroomz have been working great for me so far, definitely recommend those.
Interesting and informative article. I’ve heard of the Ned rig, but never explored it, since I thought it was primarily for bass fishing. After this explanation, I believe I’ll try it.
Thanks!
They’ve been great for me! They’ll catch fish when nothing else will!
