Hi Luke and Joe,
Please clarify for me, what pound mono backing do you use to spool 100 to 150 yds of 10 lb braid? Also, are you spooling mono to 1/4 of the way on the spool and then walking the braided line the length of the football field, cutting it, tying it, and then rewinding it back onto the spool?

I generally match the strength of the backing to the mainline, but going a bit heavier or lighter will be ok since this line pretty much never gets out.

When using a 2500 sized spool, I do not bother with walking it out to make a marking because I know it’ll be roughly 150 yards when I start the braid with a 1/4 inch gap. But if you want to have your future respools to be 100 yards, then loading the 150 yards of braid and making a splice at the 100 yard mark will work.

When using the mono as a backing on the reel , should we tie the braid on with an FG knot?

I go with the FG knot since it’s so slim. But using a blood knot or double uni will work too as long as the mono isn’t too thick.

One hack I use to save money is every year I reel the braid from one reel to another and vice versa. By doing that I am getting fresh braid on the casting end of the spool.

That’s a great idea!

With regards to saving money on braided line, PowerPro on Amazon sells 300yds of 10 lb PowerPro for 25 bucks. If you go to the KastKing store on Amazon, a 300 yd spool of 10 lb braid sells for 20 bucks – and it says on the box that it is made by Spectra – the same company that makes PowerPro. You can save 5 bucks, and get the same product.
