The Power Prawn USA Donkey Rig [Materials & Assembly]

Here’s how to tie the Power Prawn USA Donkey Rig…

Or you could even double up and reel in two fish in one!

Step By Step Directions:

To start, you need two jigheads, two Power Prawn USA Junior lures, and a monofilament leader line.

Power Prawn USA Junior lures are super easy to rig and consistently catch the inshore fish we regularly target.

The first step is to pull about 4 feet of line off the monofilament spool.

Then take the line and double it over in half, however, you want one end of the line to be longer than the other by about 4-5 inches.

Move your fingers back up to the loop that forms as a result of doubling over the line.

This loop will be the connection to the main line.

Form a simple double overhand knot with the loop and the end of the line.

Pull to cinch the knot down nicely and easily.

Now you have a loop to secure the main line to this system and two ends of the line to tie your lures on.

Tying On The Jigheads

The easiest knot to use for the jighead leader connection is the non-slip loop knot.

Perform a basic overhand knot just as before, but avoid pulling the knot tight.

Take the tag end of the line and feed it through the eye of the jighead.

Then, feed the tag end through the loop and carefully start to cinch the line down until the loop that forms roughly is the same size as an M&M.

Wrap the tag end around the main line two additional times.

Then go back through the initial loop and pull the knot tight.

Cut the tag end and repeat this process with the other jighead.

Rigging The Power Prawn USA Junior

Just as you would rig up most soft plastic lures, slide the hook point into the head of the lure and out through the body as normal.

But stop once you get to the barbs on the jighead.

Instead of forcing the lure over and onto the barbs, rotate the lure 90 degrees (using the 90 Degree Load technique) so the barbs do not dig into any of the plastic that keeps the lure together which is essential for fishing.

Once you get to the weight of the jighead, twist the lure back to normal.

Now the plastic that is securing the barbs is untouched and your lure is NOT coming off that hook!

Repeat this process for the second Power Prawn USA Junior.

Now the full Donkey Rig is on display!

You’ll have TWO darting shrimp lures bouncing around in the grass instead of just one.

Braid-To-Leader Connection

To link the braid and Donkey Rig system, we’re going to tie a Uni Knot.

First, feed the braided line through the loop of the leader line we created earlier.

Double the braided line over and create a loop with the braid.

Wrap the braid through the loop 5-7 times.

The lighter the braid, the more loops you should do.

Pull the knot tight, cut off the tag end, and you’re ready to start fishing.

How To Retrieve The Donkey Rig

You want to create an erratic bouncing and darting motion in the water.

This rig is best used on grass flats or areas where seagrass is present.

You want to reel this rig slow enough so it stays low to the ground while you give it some periodic twitches to bounce just over the grass line.

Slight resistance on each twitch of the rod indicates you’re in the strike zone.
